Consumer Credit Counseling of Buffalo is a non-profit organization governed by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). The NFCC sets the national standard for quality credit counseling, debt management services, bankruptcy counseling and education, and financial literacy training. For more than five decades, NFCC has played a vital role in providing financial counseling and education to help consumers address important personal financial management problems.

What happens to the information that you provide?
Your privacy is of utmost importance. Our agency is committed to assuring the privacy of individuals and/or families who have contacted us for assistance. The information you provide to us concerning your financial condition is strictly confidential and electronically transmitted to a Certified Consumer Credit Counselor. We assure you that all information shared both orally and in writing will be managed within legal and ethical considerations. If you choose, you can complete the form without revealing your identity.
Your "personal financial information", such as your total debt information, income, living expenses and personal information concerning your financial circumstances, provided to creditors and possibly others with your specific authorization. We may also use aggregated case file information for the purpose of evaluating our services, gathering valuable research information and designing future programs. Your anonymity will be maintained through the use of your client number or by using aggregate data in all circumstances. In all other situations, your information may be released to appropriate individuals or agencies ONLY UPON YOUR WRITTEN REQUEST , or when our staff has been served by a valid subpoena.
We would like to take the opportunity to give you a brief glimpse into how a Debt Management Plan or Creditor Repayment Plan (CRP) works. The CRP is a payment plan that would allow you to make one monthly payment to our organization; which would then be disbursed amongst your creditors. Monthly payment amounts are determined by the amount of debt owed to a creditor. The money collected is immediately disbursed to your creditors. The CRP packet you will receive after your session details the amount each creditor will receive on a monthly basis. The CRP is not a debt settlement; you will be paying back the entire balance you owe. Once accepted on a CRP, your accounts will be closed and you may be granted concessions in monthly payment amount, interest rates, or both, depending on what creditors you have. Your debts will be paid off through a CRP in five years or less.
We are only able to place unsecured debt on the plan. Unsecured debts are items such as credit cards, medical bills and personal loans. This does not include auto loans, student loans and mortgages.
The fees associated with the CRP are a one time $55 set up fee and $35 per month to service your account. Please keep in mind that the intent of a CRP is to alleviate debt as quickly as possible. A CRP is also only one option, which may or may not be suitable given one’s specific situation. What kind of questions should I expect?
We will ask you about your monthly income, essential living expenses, how many creditors you owe and the amount you owe them, and if you are behind in any payments.
You will first fill out a budget sheet for your household; please note we are looking for estimates of your monthly expenses. If you have any expense that is paid occasionally such as your car registration/property tax/clothing/gifts take the total amount for the year and divide by 12.
Please keep the following handy:
- Most current creditor statements; including credit cards, personal loans and medical bills
- Your regular household expenses, including:
- Car/Rental/Homeowner insurance
- Groceries/Household expenses
- Your periodic expenses:
- Car Repairs
- Pet expenses
In order for your counselor to help you, it is important that you supply complete and accurate answers to these questions. If at any time you feel uncomfortable with the process you can contact us and talk to an certified counselor over the telephone.
